Dyestuff industry output declines for three consecutive years

Jun 29, 2021  |  by Zhao Xinhua

In recent two or three years, due to the importance of environmental protection, the country has promoted the structural reform of the dyestuff industry, which led to the suspension of many large manufacturers of existing production capacity, small manufacturers quit the industry, the production of the dyestuff industry has declined for three consecutive years.

Disperse dyestuff is the main type of dyestuff consumed in China. Due to the dual factors of environmental protection and pandemic, the consumption of disperse dyestuff has decreased in recent three years. From 2018 to 2020, China’s dyestuff production has declined for three consecutive years. In 2017, China’s dyestuff industry output was 992,000 tons, 812,000 tons in 2018, a year-on-year decrease of 18.15 percent, 769,000 tons in 2020, a year-on-year decrease of 2.66 percent, a three-year decrease of 223,000 tons. In 2021, with the gradual control of the pandemic, the apparent consumption of disperse dyestuff will recover to the pre-pandemic level and reach 280,000 tons, and then maintain a relatively stable and slow growth.

From the perspective of China’s import and export of disperse dyestuff from 2016 to 2020, the overall export volume is much higher than the import volume, and the import volume is at a low level, and the industry import substitution trend is obvious. In 2020, the import and export of disperse dyestuff in China were 5,343.31 tons and 76,831.6 tons respectively.

In 2020, the apparent consumption of disperse dyestuff in China was 257,600 tons, decreasing by 4.73 percent year-on-year. The reason behind the decline is mainly caused by environmental protection and pandemic situation.

Combined with the growth of China’s apparent consumption of disperse dyestuff in recent years, it is estimated that with the gradual control of the pandemic in 2021, the consumption of disperse dyestuff will recover to the pre-pandemic level and reach 280,000 tons, and then maintain a compound growth rate of 2 percent to reach 310,000 tons in 2026.
