CAI cuts cotton production

India’s cotton production in 2020/21 is 35.85 million bales (170 kg/bales), down by 150,000 bales from its last forecast, according to the latest forecast of Cotton Association of India.

From October 2020 to February 2021, India’s total cotton supply was 43.089 million bales, of which 29.889 million bales were brought to market, 700,000 bales were imported and 12.5 million bales were in stock at the beginning of the period. During the same period, domestic consumption stood at 13.75 million bales and exports at 3.6 million bales. Inventory as at the end of February stood at 25.739 million bales, including 9.25 million bales from textile mills and 16.489 million bales from other channels.
 
According to CAI’s forecast, India’s total cotton supply in 2020/21 is 49.55 million bales, of which the initial inventory is 12.5 million bales, the output is 35.85 million bales, the import is 1.2 million bales (the previous year’s 1.55 million bales), and the domestic consumption is 33 million bales, the export is 6 million bales (the last forecast was 5.4 million bales), an increase of 1 million bales year-on-year, and the final inventory is 10.55 million bales, compared with 10.75 million bales last forecast.
