The European Union and Japan’s apparel retail returns downward trend

Recently, the European Union and Japan have successively released the latest apparel retail data. Statistics show that after the continuous rebound in May and June, the European Union and Japanese markets showed weak recovery momentum in July and reappeared a downward trend, with a month-on-month decline compared to June.

EU: Apparel retail sales fell 8.7% month-on-month in July  
According to Eurostat retail data, in July, EU merchandise retail sales fell 0.8% month-on-month, and rose 0.7% year-on-year. Among them, the retail sales of textile, apparel and footwear fell by 8.7% month-on-month, and continued to drop significantly by 23.7% year-on-year.
 
Japan: Apparel retail sales fell 17.2% month-on-month in July
According to statistics from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan’s retail sales of goods in July increased by 1.2% month-on-month and fell 2.8% year-on-year. Among them, textile and apparel retail sales fell 17.2% month-on-month, which greatly reversed the 39.3% month-on-month growth rate in June, down 18.9% year-on-year, and the rate of decline also expanded.
 
In July, apparel retail in department stores and supermarkets fell 21.8% year-on-year, of which men’s wear sales fell 22.9% year-on-year, women’s/children’s wear fell 25.3%, other apparel fell 22.4%, and accessories fell 15.2%.
 
Department stores: In July, apparel retail in department stores decreased by 24.2% year-on-year, of which men’s wear sales fell by 25.6% year-on-year, women’s/children’s wear fell by 26.4%, other apparel fell by 29.6%, and accessories fell by 19.6%.
 
Supermarkets: In July, supermarket apparel retail sales fell 16.2% year-on-year, of which men’s wear sales fell 19% year-on-year, women’s/children’s wear fell 22.8%, other apparel fell 11.2%, and accessories fell 1.9%.
