How should China's medical textile industry go in the future?

Mar 29, 2019  |  by CT
With the increasing demand of domestic medical textiles market and the introduction and improvement of various industry standards, the domestic medical textiles industry market has further standardized and gradually entered a healthy and stable stage of development.

The experts predict that the industry will grow at a rate of more than 15% in the next 15 to 20 years. Medical textiles have become one of the key investment directions in the industry. Moreover, investment hotspots will focus on the research and development of middle and high-end products, as well as technological transformation and equipment updating of enterprises. Research and development of more human-friendly medical textile materials will become an important direction to improve the level of treatment and medical services, so that the performance of medical textiles presents a diversified, high-end development trend. These trends have obvious extrusion effects on low-grade medical and health textiles, and are conducive to promoting industrial structure optimization and transformation and upgrading.

Although the domestic medical textile industry has broad prospects, the problems and bottlenecks are also obvious. At present, the five most developed markets for medical textiles are the United States, Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia. The sales of medical textiles in these five markets account for about 90% of the total sales in the world market. Especially in the United States, more than 90% of hospitals choose to use disposable medical supplies, the market penetration is very high. In 2018, the global demand for disposable medical textiles has exceeded 200 billion US dollars. Because of its relatively late start, the market share of medical materials in China is relatively low in the world market.

In this regard, the experts suggest that China should strengthen the research of high-tech biomedical textile materials, transition from basic research to applied research, pay close attention to the design and development of new products, accelerate cooperation between domestic and international technical cooperation, manufacturers and medical departments, and improve the popularization and application of low-tech medical textile materials. We will focus on the research and development of medical tissue and organ materials, develop high-efficiency medical protective products, and promote the new lightweight, ultra-thin, non-irritating and degradable sanitary products. In addition, the cost of medical textiles still needs to be reduced. Technological progress and economies of scale can reduce unit costs. By building a synergistic innovation chain of industrial technology, the industry can occupy the high end of the value chain and achieve win-win results.
